HANDS FOR HAITI

An excerpt from Dr. Daniel Snyder, the physician our missions team will be working with while in Haiti ...

Greetings,

My name is Daniel Snyder and I am writing concerning your upcoming trip to Haiti in September.

My bias is to have an experience that accomplishes 3 things.
1 is to get some work done!! 2 is the have a cross cultural experience and spend time with our Haitian brethren. 3 is to give and to take something away spiritual. In order to do this I would propose the following.

Dessalines Hospital has 9 outlying clinics in the Artibonite valley. These clinics are staffed by our nurses and they give general care to the local population for things that do not require hospital care. The clinics in general are not run very well, are in need of constant repair due to lack of funding and are not used very much by the local population because of the limitations of what the nurses can do in the clinics. I would like to see us visit one or more of these clinics to hold our own clinics. We would announce prior that we were coming, bring medications etc. In general, this would mean we could see anywhere from 50-1000 patients a day as the people will come!!! Because of this we would work with the hospital administration and nurses to set numbers up of patients that we could handle, give out tickets for patients to be seen and set up a system of crowd control.

While at the clinics, those that are non-medical would be able to work on the clinics. This would involve simple carpentry, painting and general repairs. Lastly, while at the clinics we would be able to set up a mechanism to share the Gospel and counsel patients. We would use team members with translators.

The last part of the team trip would involve working directly with the hospital chaplain and committee we have for "Spiritual formation." There are numerous things that can be done and needed to be done to encourage this committee and the hospital staff. We would do this by ending our clinic visits mid-afternoon so that we could have time to return and also spend time at the hospital working with the this committee and also would be able to see what is happening at the hospital during this time. There will be medical needs that arise there also that we could participate in....
